Who doesn't get excited at the thought of an iPhone on the cheap? We all do. That is probably why the $100 iPhone gambit is the most widespread marketing scam of the year.
Best Buy has joined other manufacturers with a tantalizing offer of hugely discounted iPhones. A quick glance at the advertisement
and you see the 8GB iPhone 3G for $100 through Febrauary 28th
. By now, you know better than to swallow the $100 iPhone offer hook, line and sinker.
We'd better take a look at the fine print.
Best Buy is offering the iPhone 3G models with 8GB and 16GB of memory for $99 and $199, respectively. Any guesses on the term of your service plan? Did you answer 2 years? If so, you are correct-2 years is standard for a service contract these days.
If that were the only catch, Best Buy's offer would warrant some serious attention. Sadly, in order to qualify for the iPhone offer, you have to be Premier Silver Reward Zone member. Because I'm only a lowly "Economy Class, Bronze Reward Zone" member, I'm not eligible for the cheap iPhone.
So, just how does one become an elite Premier Silver club member
Oh. That's easy. You only have to spend $2500 at Best Buy in one year. So, let me see if I understand this correctly. I can buy a $2600, $100 iPhone at Best Buy?
I might have to wait on this one.
On the brighter side, Best Buy is offering a consolation prize to those of us who won't be joining the Premier club. We can still get $50 off the price of an iPhone (with 2 year contract) through February 28th
