Ditch your Computer, Put Skype on your Phone
Skype announce at CES that they were putting less emphasis on their line of specialized Skype phones and introducing their new Skype "Lite" application (that's tech speak for cell phone software). Now you can use Skype on your phone, not theirs.(Note* the Skype phone still exists, however it is not available in the U.S. That's ok, we don't want your stupid smelly, coodie phone anyway.)
Skype continues to amaze me. Using the powers of the internets Skype developed a sound and reliable way for interneters (i.e. online gamers, and poor college students) to make long distance calls without racking up long distance charges.
Skype "Lite" is available on Intel-based mobile devices (i.e. internet tablets and netbooks) and dozens of phones from popular manufactures including Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola and LG. It is also available on Android and Java-Enabled phones (that's you G1!).
The necessity for Skype on your cell phone is in higher demand in Europe (where Skype is based) than in the U.S. The way our mobile system works is on contracts and almost all major providers have coast-to-coast coverage, eliminating long distance completely. However, it is more difficult for Europe to be on a contract system because countries are so much closer together. Therefore, European phones are usually unlocked, expensive and pay-as-you-go; making Skype on your "mobile" a hotter commodity.
Now, you are starting to see how cool this can be.
So, really quick, we're going to update you on how to talk Skype:
Skype me!
We Skype.
Leave me alone I'm Skyping.
Have you Skyped today?
I love my Skype.
She said she Skyped.
I'll Skype you later.
Keep these cool phrases in mind when you are studying abroad this summer. You'll need your Skype to call home for money.
