The Samsung Propel is designed to take advantage of the explosion in the field of text messaging. It’s pretty typical of mid-market multimedia phones but does feature a full QWERTY keyboard.
The Samsung Propel affords the user the ability to send email, text messages and instant messages, as do the vast majority of devices currently on the market; however, the presence of a full QWERTY keyboard is pretty unusual in a phone that competes is this price and feature set range. In order for the Propel to retain its rather narrow profile, the keyboard which slides downward rather narrow and requires care when thumb typing to avoid mistakes. Still it’s quite usable and certainly preferable to a standard numeric keypad for messaging.
3G Data AccessThe Samsung Propel provides access to AT&T’s impressive array of 3G services including high speed web browsing, streaming music and video, and access to XM Radio. The phone also has an integrated GPS receiver that can be used in conjunction with AT&T Navigator for turn-by-turn driving directions.
Multimedia SuiteThe Propel is equipped with a media player which supports the most prevalent audio and video file formats. Its display screen measures 2.2-inches diagonally. Display resolution is a disappointing 172 x 220 pixels. The 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom is less than would be expected but the resulting pictures are surprisingly good. It also serves as a video recorder. The device features a paltry 50MB of memory but will accept up to a 8GB expansion card.
Battery LifeEstimated talk time for the Propel is 300 minutes with standby time estimated to be 240 hours.
DesignThe Samsung Propel features a rather sleek design though is somewhat more angular than its competitors. The compact design necessitates a narrower keyboard than would be optimal.
The Samsung Propel is a reasonable choice for someone seeking a moderately priced messaging phone with the advantage of a full keyboard.
