If you’re going to name a mobile phone “Instinct” the interface had better be good and it is. Although the Samsung Instinct doesn’t have an operating system, this touch screen multimedia cell phone includes a lot of the features from the notably popular Apple iPhone 3G.
Standout Features
• 3-inch touchscreen
• GPS
• 3G
• 2 MP camera
Features
The Instinct features a vivid 3-inch touch screen with a 432x240 pixel resolution. The interface has tactile feedback (vibration) to let you know the phone recognized a touch. Since the entire face of the phone is the touch screen, text entry is accomplished using the virtual QWERTY keyboard which defaults to landscape mode. You can also enter text using graffiti mode and the included stylus. An interesting feature of the Instinct is the option to adjust the display’s calibration and sensitivity to touch.
The Instinct includes its own type of visual voicemail, stereo Bluetooth capability, assisted GPS and turn-by-turn directions, strong battery talk time of nearly 6 hours and 32 MB of built-in memory with a MicroSD slot that takes up to an 8GB card. The phone also includes a full HTML web browser, speedy 3G and various organizational tools including: voice command, texting—bothtext only and multimedia messages, a calendar, calculator, tip calculator, notepad, world clock, timer, stopwatch and a unit converter. You can also connect to your work email as long as your company uses Outlook Web Access and the emails you create on your Instinct will automatically sync with your office computer. The same goes for the calendaring option.
The Instinct has a standard 2 MP camera with 2x zoom and little else besides a fairly limited video recording ability. The camera does have a “fuzzy picture” warning that lets you know if you’re about to take a poor quality photo.
The music player is pretty average with the standard options such as album art and shuffle and repeat. The Instinct can continue to play music in the background even while you’re using the phone’s other features. If you receive a call while immersed in sound, the music will pause while you answer and then resume once the conversation is completed.
Summary of Reviews from Across the Internet
No WiFi is perplexing for a phone that has a full HTML web browser. No Flash support which isn’t unusual in cell phones generally. No accelerometer means switching the display from landscape to portrait mode requires choosing that option on the screen.
Users respond positively to the adjustable sensitivity on the touchscreen.
Summary
The Instinct has many of the great elements that are available in the high end smartphones. It’s a great multimedia cell phone for users who don’t want to deal with the cost or intricacies of a smartphone but are looking for lots of options.
