New HD iPhone/iPod Touch Cords to Render Apple TV Obsolete?
As a child of the 80s, the ongoing joke involving 8-track versus cassette, Kaleikovision versus Atari or even Beta versus VHS was largely lost on me and only witnessed in 70s and 80s era TV and film productions. It seems, in retrospect, these few cases of Product 1 versus Product 2 instances were only priming us for the new world order of instant obsolescence and permanent stuck-with-8-track remorse and begrudging or, for some, eager adoption of new technology. But, hey, progress is progress and it does, in fact, have a price tag.Long intro paragraph aside: Apple has, according to PhoneNews, issued its licensed retailers an order to place existing (i.e. newly-obsolete) iPhone/iPod Touch A/V cords on clearance. Reason being: a new cord is soon arriving that will support HD output, lending the multimedia device Apple TV-like functionality, but at a fraction of the size!
The new cord, when coupled with a solid Wi-Fi connection, will make it possible to stream content in a fashion more similar to Apple TV. The now-obsolete A/V cords were intended for playing pre-existing content already saved on the device, not streaming. As the iPhone and iPod Touch can already display video in 720p and 1080i resolutions, the move itself was, seemingly, inevitable. But, with the Apple TV functionality thrown in and with rumors of future iPhone and iPod Touch models offering higher resolution, who knows how far the multimedia devices will go, and how many other devices they will render obsolete in their wake.
As of yet, there has been no confirmed shipping date announced.
