Ever since HTC made the HD2 and its enormous screen official we’ve been anxiously waiting to know if it would make its way over to this side of the hemisphere. The HD2 goes on sale in Europe this week, but HTC announced today that this smartphone would also be coming to America. Here’s the kicker: We won’t be getting it until next year.

It’s hard to wait that long, knowing that Europeans will be gliding their fingers over that lovely 4-inch screen the whole time. HTC failed to be more specific about the carrier and release date, but early 2010 is the general window. When it arrives, it should be pretty similar to the phone Europeans are getting: the zippy 1GHz Snapdragon processor, Windows Mobile 6.5 and 4.3-inch touchscreen.

We’re still surprised HTC went with Windows Mobile 6.5 over the Android operating system which they’ve embraced in so many other phones. However, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is excited about WinMo 6.5 appearing in the HD2. "The HTC HD2 shows what's possible through our close partnership with HTC and it breaks new ground for Windows phones by delivering a beautiful multi-touch screen that people will love,” he said.

Touchscreens aren’t exactly new territory, Steve, although this particular example is both large and enchanting. If you’re worried about the dreaded Windows Mobile interface, you’ll be happy to know HTC has created a skin that completely redesigns the interface and makes the whole thing easier to use. Naturally, Steve Ballmer didn’t comment on that.
