Nokia announced today the release of the Nokia N97. This phone is so packed with features that they aren't even calling it a phone. It's a mobile computer. We're skeptical over whether Nokia can really make that claim, but we'll run with it for the moment. But here's the problem: Do we call it a computer, or a phone?

The latest to jump into the touch screen world, Nokia has managed to keep one foot on the button-pushing shore with a horizontal QWERTY keyboard that you have to slide out to access. But it still looks kind of cool because as the screen slides over it angles up ever so slightly, making it look like a miniature computer.

Nokia says this is the phonecomputer that can adjust to the world around us. With integrated A-GPS sensors, the Nokia N97 can intuitively understand where it is, plus it is up-to-date with the latest information from your social networking sites. Basically, it knows everything. We're only hoping that since the compuphone will update your "social location" in real time that friends won't find out how much time you spend using your phonuter in the bathroom.

Check out some of the other specs:

  • 32GB on-board memory

  • GPS (with a compass)

  • Accelerometer for landscape/portrait screen switching

  • 5MP camera with LED flash and more

This little phone ... we mean computer, will probably keep you busy for several weeks just discovering and figuring out how to use all the features.

Of course, all the hype and excitement about the N97 is a little preemptive. Americans will probably have to wait another 18 months to 30 years before we can even see it. The N97 is being launched in Europe and Asia beginning of 2009 with no word yet on when the US release date will be.
