Sprint/Samung's New Phone is Literally Green

Samsung definitely wasn’t going for the subtle approach. I wonder if they felt like aggressively advertising a product as green isn’t quite enough, they needed to make sure no one missed their point. So we introduce the new Samsung Reclaim – the world’s greenest phone. Literally.

We’re not certain if the Samsung Reclaim is edible because a lot of it is made from corn, but you might not want to eat the phone unless you start having problems. For all their green hype, Samsung has actually created a pretty useful little dumbphone. It’s a full QWERTY with 3G and will be available for less than $50 with a 2-year agreement (after the billions of rebates and so forth they offer). On top of that, $2 of the profit will go toward The Nature Conversancy’s Adopt an Acre program.

But it is a green phone too, made from all bio-plastic material (along with the corn). It’s free of the bad things you can find in electronic devices like PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and BFR (brominated flame retardants). Even the packaging is made from 70 percent recycled materials and from the pictures looks like it could almost be repurposed as a bird house with a little paint after you’ve gotten the phone out.

The phone will be available from Sprint retail stores staring on August 16 and will be offered from Wal-Mart in early September (we’ll ignore the fact that Wal-Mart has occasionally been named the antithesis of green living and just leave it at that).
