Android Sales to Overtake iPhone by 2012?
A simple glance around the coffee shop's tables or into a coworker's workspace make it clear that the iPhone has a strong corner on the smartphone market. But the iPhone is by no means the only game in town anymore. Due to increased marketing and sales of Android, BlackBerry, Linux and Windows Mobile OS based smartphones, the ascendancy of the iPhone is less certain. According to Androidcommunity.com, current trends indicate that Android smartphones will be outselling iPhones as soon as 2012. In the UK, G1 sales alone account for 20 percent of T-Mobile's contract sales. With news that the upcoming Android smartphone, the Magic, is on its way, there's every reason to believe that Google's mobile OS will continue to grow in popularity.
Smartphones now outsell notebook computers, and despite the grim nature of economic news this quarter, smartphone sales aren't expected to slow significantly. With more and more apps that essentially allow users to replace their notebooks, smartphone sales will substantially erode notebook sales for the foreseeable future.
