Unilever Creates a Flash Work-Around for the iPhone

Along with everybody else in the iPhone-verse, Unilever got tired of waiting for Flash to come to the iPhone. Unlike everybody else, they decided to do something about it because, you know, they have stuff to sell through you through Flash advertisements.

Apple and Adobe have been notoriously reticent about the future of Flash on the iPhone. Unilever bypassed all the Flash problems and created an advertisement that functions similarly to Flash. The ad campaign has been running for about 3 months now and was fairly successful for them, but why should you be excited about annoying AXE ads popping up on your iPhone? Well, you shouldn't, but the implications of Unilever's actions should excite you.

The ability to have Flash-like functionality has never been a problem for the iPhone; as Unilever showed, there are ways to work around it. This means that we shouldn't have to wait for Apple and Adobe to figure out a way to make Flash work (although it's probably not a technical problem so much as Apple's desire to maintain a stranglehold on the App Store and app development, but that's a rant for a different day). Obviously, different companies will come up with different coding solutions, so there won't be a single universal solution, but if they are all intended for the same device, the iPhone, you as an iPhone owner won't have to worry about compatibility issues.

You shouldn't have to wait for ubiquitous technology like this in today's world. So thanks Unilever, for paving the way for more innovation and problem-solving, even if it does mean we have to have more "Dirty Night Determinator" ads. Ugh.
