Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM Shows Better Touchscreen Interface for Fingers

There are some vehement arguments for and against the Windows Mobile OS for phones. Scratch that, there are only arguments against, the rest of the people just use it and try not to let it raise their blood pressure. I fall into the latter category: I use it; it’s fine for what it does, whatever. That’s not to say I don’t have a gripe about it.

Here’s the gripe: Windows Mobile is a pain to use on touchscreen phones because it’s designed for use with a stylus, not fingers. I don’t even have particularly chunky fingers either. It’s the 21st century; we don’t need styli anymore!

That’s why I’m so excited that images from the Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM show a more finger-friendly approach to the interface (right side of the image above). Microsoft allows you to swipe the screen (a ubiquitous touchscreen move nowadays) to switch between menus that used little tabs before. Finally!

Of course, we mustn’t get too excited because the transformation may not be complete. Notice the OK button in the top right corner? Still as tiny and dangerously close to other icons as it was before. C’mon Microsoft! Who wants to pull out a stylus or try to just barely tap a tiny corner of the screen just to hit the OK button?
