Steve Ballmer thinks Windows Mobile is one of Microsoft's big businesses and that the future of Windows Mobile is bright. And with the planned introduction of WinMo 7 in 2010, Microsoft is just going to keep moving it forward. In fact, Ballmer all but scoffed at the recession with the idea that WinMo and its functions will continue to gain market share and grow in the cell phone market. He sure knows how to inspire confidence.

Although Ballmer said Windows Mobile is "somewhat unprofitable" right now, he expects the market will continue growing as Microsoft moves from just the smartphone segment to the whole cell phone market. And, even with a downturn in the economy, Ballmer said WinMo is particularly suited for low cost smartphones pretty much across the board.

In the future, Microsoft plans to have Windows OS for computers and WinMo as essentially the same project. In the future, probably more noticeable in 2010 with 7, there will be more shared technologies between the OS for the computer on the one for the phone. Ballmer mentioned a couple specific features like presentation surface and browser technology among others.

We imagine this means that in time your phone will be able to replace your computer. One more notch on the smartphone's belt for technologies it will eventually overpower. But we probably shouldn't get too excited about WinMo 7 changing the world when we haven't even seen just how Windows Mobile 6.5 does in the wild.
